Owner Story

Owner and proprietor Tan Kai Lek is an unassuming man and almost media shy; the 2nd generation that owns and runs one of the largest wood work and furniture manufacturing factories in Ipoh, called Bukit Merah Wood Products Sdn Bhd.

The factory has been collecting old woods for a very long period. The passion is the serendipity of having skilled Nepalese paint artisans and Indonesian wood carvers in his factory and the idea for The Happy 8 retreats was born.

Art Drawing in

The Happy 8 Retreat

The Wall Painting in The Happy 8 Retreat branches are all from the same Nepalese paint artisan. Mr. Tan is a man who sees value in people and things. It was a normal day, a foreign worker working for a living—sweeping the floor for years and one day before he went back to his country, Mr. Tan told him to do whatever he wants on his last day before leaving Malaysia and so he told Mr. Tan to provide him with color paints, brushes and a piece of leaf.

Mascot YASOH

SEED. ‘YASOH’ is The Happy 8 Retreat’s Mascot. There was a day when the Nepalese Artist picked up a piece of  seed from a big tree and he drew on the seed and gave the ugly and unwanted roadside-seed a second life.  From that spontaneous idea to the SOUL of a company; from the first YASOH to the YASOH families.

“This is a living ART. When you feed them with SUNLIGHT, AIR, WATER and NUTRITION, it will grow; If you give out all the LOVE and PATIENCE, it will start to flourish and becomes a BIG TREE.” -- Mr. Tan Kai Lek

The artist started to draw and when he was done with his drawing, he shown it to Mr. Tan.

After having his days off in Nepal, he came back to the wood factory.

Mr. Tan let him draw whatever he wants in no measure of time being used.

He believe that when people are doing  things that they are passionate about, things that they spent time on will produce incredible results in the end.
